Candidates seek municipal offices

Here is a partial list of candidates who have qualified to run for municipal offices in Jefferson, Shelby and parts of St. Clair counties, based on information provided to The News by election officials. Incumbents are marked by an (i). The News will list other candidates who qualify in the Local News section in future editions and run a complete list of candidates in each race on July 17. Qualifying ends July 15.

Municipal elections will be Aug. 26 for all cities and towns in Jefferson, Shelby and St. Clair counties except Bessemer and Birmingham.

Karl Rove won't testify about former Alabama governor's prosecution; Democrats threaten contempt charge

WASHINGTON - Former White House political adviser Karl Rove will defy a congressional subpoena and refuse to testify next week about former Gov. Don Siegelman's criminal prosecution, prompting House Democrats to threaten him Thursday with contempt charges.

A House panel investigating allegations that decisions at the U.S. Justice Department under President Bush were tainted by partisan influence had scheduled Rove's testimony for next Thursday, but months of negotiations over the terms of his appearance have failed repeatedly.

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee notified Rove's attorney Thursday that they plan to convene the hearing anyway in the hopes that he'll change his mind and show up. In a letter, they said "a refusal to appear in violation of the subpoena could subject Mr. Rove to contempt proceedings."
