U.S. judge's ruling promised Monday; case could tip races The fight over Franklin County's provisional ballots, which might prove decisive in a congressional race and two Ohio House races, goes on.At the end of a hearing yesterday, U.S. District Judge Algenon L. Marbley said he will need until Monday morning to decide whether he has the jurisdiction to consider issuing a temporary order halting the processing of provisional ballots.

Finally, the outlines of a coherent debate on the federal bailout. This comes as welcome relief from a campaign season that gave us the House Republicans' know-nothing rejectionism, John McCain's mindless railing against "greed and corruption" and Barack Obama's detached enunciation of vacuous bailout "principles" that allowed him to be all things to all people.

Six months ago, after the California Supreme Court struck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, Chief Justice Ronald George (who voted with the majority) explained to a reporter how he had come to his decision. He said he asked himself, “When is it that a court should act? When is it that a court is shirking its responsibility by not acting, and when is a court overreaching? That’s a real conundrum.”

There are a lot of meetings going on among some Republicans trying to figure out what went wrong on Election Day and how the party needs to respond. None of them involve what the media like to call the base, the folks at the grass roots whose votes, after all, determine the outcome of elections.The gatherings get a lot of media attention because the media mistakenly believe that the people attending them represent the grass roots of the GOP.

You better watch out. There is a new combatant in the Christmas wars.Ads proclaiming, "Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness' sake," will appear on Washington, D.C., buses starting next week and running through December. The American Humanist Association unveiled the provocative $40,000 holiday ad campaign Tuesday.In lifting lyrics from "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," the Washington-based group is wading into what has become a perennial debate over commercialism, religion in the public square and the meaning of Christmas.
